In “Map It Out! A Beginner’s Guide to Maps and Mapping Skills,” learners will dive into the world of maps through a fun, hands-on approach designed for ages 8–12. This self-paced course blends geography, art, and problem-solving to build a solid foundation in mapping and spatial awareness. Learners will explore: What maps are and how they are used in everyday life Different types of maps (physical, political, thematic, etc.) How to use a compass rose and cardinal directions Map symbols, legends, and keys How to use map scales and measure distance How to read and create maps using grids and simple coordinates How to apply their skills by creating their own map Each week includes: A short, pre-recorded video lesson (8–12 minutes) with clear explanations and examples A printable worksheet or hands-on mapping activity A creative challenge or mini-project A classroom discussion prompt to encourage sharing and collaboration Learners may complete the activities at their own pace and are welcome to revisit lessons at any time. Teaching Style: My teaching style is upbeat, approachable, and visual. I explain concepts using real-world examples, colorful slides, and stories that help students connect to the material. I encourage creativity, critical thinking, and exploration—mapping is not just about memorizing facts, it’s about understanding how we navigate the world. Learner Interaction: While this is a self-paced class, learners are encouraged to participate in the Outschool classroom by: Posting photos or scans of their weekly projects Sharing discoveries, like local maps or real-world examples Asking questions or responding to discussion prompts I check the classroom multiple times per week to respond to posts, answer questions, and give feedback on projects. This course is perfect for learners who enjoy working independently but still want a place to share their creativity and connect with others.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Biology/Biological Sciences from Western Governors University
I have over 10 years of experience in science education, with a strong background in geography, earth science, and environmental studies. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences Secondary Education and am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Veterinary Science. As part of my education and teaching training, I completed coursework in earth science, which included mapping, landforms, and physical geography.
I have taught mapping skills and basic geography concepts in both classroom and informal learning settings, including science camps and homeschool enrichment programs. My teaching experience includes working with students ages 8–18 in both live and self-paced formats, and I specialize in creating engaging, hands-on lessons that connect scientific concepts to the real world.
In addition to teaching on Outschool, I have led virtual and in-person science classes where students learned to use compass directions, interpret maps, and create their own based on real or imagined environments. I also have experience working with 4-H youth programs, where I developed project-based learning activities for elementary and middle school students.
My goal as an educator is to spark curiosity and build confidence by making learning interactive, creative, and fun.
