Map Design: Discover and Design Underground Structures (10-14 Years)
Class experience
US Grade 7 - 10

1. Learn about ancient underground cities. 2. Develop the imagination and learn graphic design communication skills. 3. Learn concepts of scale, measurement, and the frame of reference for maps. Benefits of map making are: - Topographical skills: Children are able to use directional labels such as north, south, east, and west - Projective skills: Children are able to use their own position to determine a location and its relationship to other elements - Euclidian skills: Children can accurately perceive spatial relationships such as those that are used on a paper map
I am a qualified schoolteacher and have taken many school classes to explore sites around London and then map them. I am also a trained artist and storyteller and bring geography and cultural studies alive through images and narratives. I have worked as a graphic web designer and taught visual communication to teenagers. Through the activity of making maps we will be activating the imagination and learning how to present ideas and solutions graphically.
