US Grade 4 - 7
Latitude and longitude are used to describe the absolute location of a place. Map basics (such as these) are part of the geographical standards embedded in the National Council for Social Studies standards as well as many state standards. This class can serve as an introduction to latitude and longitude or as a refresher. We will have fun exploring the differences between the two sets of imaginary lines and practicing our plotting skills. I will encourage all students to try their best and participate in the activities (which will be frequent). Nearpod will be incorporated for the presentation of informational slides and to allow for individualized practice opportunities for each student. Regarding prior knowledge, students would benefit from a minimally basic understanding of the cardinal directions (north, south, east, west). Depending on the number of learners enrolled, and the interest in certain things being discussed, the outline may be adjusted slightly to allow for more depth and/or student led research. Students are encouraged to ask questions, if needed. A positive class culture is a must, so I prefer learners to take turns when participating and to treat each other respectfully.
Learning Goals
-Students will differentiate between latitude and longitude.
-Students will use latitude and longitude to locate points on a map.
