Students will be presented with an interactive PowerPoint that will educate students regarding map functionalities and key symbols. 1. Students will learn how to use a compass rose to identify cardinal directions as well as navigate intermediate directions. (5-7 minutes) 2. Students will be presented with a small map and have students infer information regarding the map. They will that a map is always smaller than the area it represents. (5-7 minutes) 3.Students will be taught map symbols:(How roads are shown on the map, what footpaths look like, streams and rivers, wooded areas, key symbols. (5-7 minutes) 4. Students will be taught that any place on Earth can be found by using a latitude and longitude methods. Latitude and longitude are sets of imaginary lines that circle Earth. (5-7 minutes) 5. Students will do a Jeopardy game regarding symbolic vocabulary: key, streams, compass, and ordinance, latitude, and longitude. (5-7 minutes)
Learning Goals
In this class, students will be learning the functionalities of a map. Students will learn to recognize symbols, interpret directionality, find an ordinance, and learn to identify compass directions.

Hi! My name is Sidra (Ms.Shafiq). I have been in the education field for a couple of years now. I currently am a first-grade teacher at a brick and mortar school. I hope to teach subjects math, science, social studies, and English for grades K-3. I currently have a Masters of Arts in Teaching in Early Childhood (K-5) from Mercer University as well as a Bachelor's in Psychology. Outside of my teacher life, I'm a gardener, pinteresting some recipe, or making sure my first graders are on track!
My philosophy on education is to make it fun, engaging, interactive, warm, and encouraging. "Education must be perceived as a continuing reconstruction of experience" - John Dewey. Because of that, I can't make to make an impressionable academic memory for my future students
