Many Movements! (Even More Precision In Stop Motion Animation)

Class
Ben Erlandson, Ph.D.
Average rating:4.4Number of reviews:(40)
Most shots, sequences, and scenes in animated films have multiple things moving at the same time. How do we keep track of all this to make sure we get each shot captured correctly as efficiently as possible?

Class experience

Students will learn techniques for planning and tracking multiple movements across shots for improved precision in the capture of complex motion in their stop motion animations.
I think stop motion is an excellent combination of the arts, science, math, and technology. As an art form, it is accessible and approachable to anyone, regardless of background knowledge.
I have been making stop-motion animated films for nearly thirty years, starting when I was a middle school student. I currently run The Wolfbird studios, a learning-focused animation and interactive media studio. The most recent stop motion animation, created in collaboration with a dance professor at a nearby university, is currently on the festival circuit and has already started winning awards: most recently Best Experimental Film at the Frostbite International Online Film Festival.
Students do not need to purchase any materials.
Any stop motion animation app is appropriate for this class, but students do not need to download any apps to follow along with the class.
Students can use any materials available on hand in their homes to practice animation techniques in this class (e.g., dolls, model cars, legos, coffee mugs, building blocks, cardboard boxes, coins, etc.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There is no sensitive content in this class.
