Class Experience

Intermediate - Advanced Level
🔐 This class is in the series of Manual DSLR Photography for Teens classes. It follows the 101, and is the foundation class of the 200 levels. It is for graduates of Manual DSLR Photography 101 for Teens. Students need to know their way around their camera: how to use aperture, shutter speed, and ISO together to create a photograph, as well as the elements of strong composition. (Check out the 101 if that sounds like a better fit!) You can view the class series here: https://outschool.com/saved-classes/c456d7ae-ea21-48fe-93fd-b750640362aa

🖇️Prerequisite: This class builds directly on the Manual DSLR Photography 101 class skills. It is required that learners have:
❕Completed at least Manual DSLR Photography for Teens 101 prior to when class starts
OR
❕Placed into the class -- message me for details.

📷 This class covers:

✴ Building on their skills creating exposures through aperture, ISO, and shutter speed, students will expand their portfolio and use of composition through additional technical skills such as lighting, white balance, timing, and working in black and white.

✴ Students will explore four 200-series topics in photography, in the context of working with more technically challenging lighting situations and settings: Night Photography, Portraits, Street/Documentary Photography, Black & White Photography.

✴ Students will learn to speak about their work with detail and pride, and share it with the group.

✴ Woven in with the lessons, students will also learn a little bit about famous photographers from history.

Photography assignments will be given each week, and each student will share their work and discuss their experience and any questions around the assignment. Handouts will be given outlining the material covered in each class. Learner progress is evaluated through review of their images.

Week 1 - Night Photography
Week 2 - Portrait Photography
Week 3 - Street/Documentary Photography
Week 4 - Black and White Photography
Week 5 - Final Project Planning
Week 6 - Final Project Proposals
Week 7 - Final Project Presentations

Small class sizes ensure plenty of 1:1 support and discussion of each student's work.

**Note: I also work part-time on-call as a birth doula, and may be at a birth and need to cancel a class. In the event of this, a 1-class refund or make-up class will be offered, whichever you prefer.**

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Some photographers and/or photo theorists who we learn about may have photography work or analysis that involves nudity and themes of sexuality, much like you might encounter in an exhibit at an art museum or in fashion photography. We will not explore these in class, but there is the possibility that students come upon them during further research.
Supply List
All learners will need:

#1 A DSLR camera and lens, or other camera with a manual exposure mode to adjust the settings for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. (Make sure you have a memory card and battery + charger, too!)

#2 The means to upload the photos to a computer, tablet, or cellphone with an internet connection and web browser. For example, with a cable for the camera or a memory card reader. Please make sure your learner can upload photos to the device prior to class, so they are ready to complete your projects and focus on learning how to use their camera.

If you are unsure if your camera has a manual exposure mode, you can check the camera instruction manual, or feel free to message me! A film SLR camera could also be used, but the photos must be scanned to digital files, and with developing time learners would have less time to complete the projects each week.

Many introductory DSLR cameras are available for relatively low cost used or new.
