Class Experience

Students will learn about how to create Manga comic arts. We will look at facial proportions, and body proportions, how the ratio is often lengthened, and how facial expressions, and proportions are different to make our own Manga characters. We will deal a lot with creating unique characters from the main character or protagonist, and the antagonist, additional characters to round out good story lines. How to create layouts in the rough, and final drafts. No background knowledge is required, but an understanding of Japanese Anime, and how it differs from regular comics is suggested as Comic Arts is taught in other sections. Homework is assigned and will entail drawing characters, rough drafts, and final drafts. Learner progress is evaluated through feedback as we go, and it is an encouraging class for all.

Week 1: Students will look at regular facial anatomy of traditional faces, and draw this out and learn the differences in Manga. Homework will be to draw an original Manga face using correct proportions, practice will be done in class 1st.

Week 2: Students will share works from last week with all and we will discuss. Students will work on the figure proportions. We will examine how they are different than traditional body "head heights" for male and female. We will practice drawing in Anime head heights for Male and Female characters. Rough Drafts of the body proportions are homework.

Week 3: Students will share Manga Figures from week prior and discuss. We will then look at what makes a good main character (good guy-girl- protagonist) How are these characters uniquely Manga in the Japanese comic arts. We will work on character traits, clothing, hair and students will discuss traits for their own characters. Homework: To create your main character from weeks 1, 2, and 3's class information.

Week 4: Students will share their main character, ideas etc. from last class and discuss. We then will look into the antagonist in Anime, how is this different or similar to heroes? Then we will look at the villain/ antagonist and see how their looks, character traits are different. Students will develop this in class, and complete as homework.

Manga Art- Japanese Comics- The Art of Anime 2 is a continuation of this course and will be offered shortly after for another 4 weeks of script writing in Manga, creating a cover, and starting your own Manga series!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Why I offer this class, is that I love to draw faces and the figure, it's what I majored in for grad school and what I do professionally. Why I offer Manga is that this is a natural continuation of what I do and what students love. I have taught Manga classes both live at the middle, high school level in the public and private setting, as well as in the museum setting. I think my ability to breakdown proportions is what e really helps students to continue on their own.
