Description
Class Experience
This class is taught in English.
Learners will learn simple words and concepts and form a positive association with the sights and sounds of Mandarin Chinese, especially the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. This class sets a foundation and desire for future learning.
My native language is English—I became professionally fluent in Mandarin Chinese through more than nine years of intense study that gave me a deep appreciation for the Chinese language and culture. I will pass this appreciation on to your learner in my class! During my year of teaching English and German in Taipei, I simultaneously studied Mandarin with a private tutor, which activated my interest in the language. I chose Mandarin as my language focus while earning a Master's Degree in International Relations and have completed multiple total immersion courses in China. Two of these courses included a language pledge to speak only Mandarin Chinese for four weeks and six weeks straight! My professional work in China has taken me to many Mandarin-speaking places, including Harbin, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Kunming, and Taipei. Most importantly, from nearly twenty years of total time and experience working with China, I gained a lifelong love of Mandarin Chinese and I can't wait to share it with your child! > ESL Ms. Christina began her career as an English teacher in Taiwan. > EARLY LITERACY Later, she worked for seven years in the children's department of a public library with a focus on Early Literacy and multilingual programming. > EDUCATION Ms. Christina has a Bachelor of Arts degree in INTERNATIONAL POLITICS and GERMAN. She has a Master of Arts degree in INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS with a language focus on MANDARIN CHINESE.
Learners will have one simple worksheet to complete / color after each class, taking approximately 5 minutes.
2 files available upon enrollmentA one-page handout with the Chinese character of the day will be provided before each class. The learner can print the page or bring a blank piece of paper to write on.
25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
