In this Mandarin Chinese class, learners will explore math & geometry - shapes, sizes, patterns, visual-spatial recognition, and relative comparisons. Learners will enhance understanding by drawing. This class is held in 80% Chinese.

Class Experience

In this Mandarin Chinese class, we will explore shapes, sizes, patterns, visual-spatial recognition, and relative comparisons with hands-on activities. The amount of Mandarin Chinese and English used will be adjusted depending on learners.

For each class, there will be a quick introduction. We will then practice identifying objects on screen and in real life. We will practice using the unit vocabulary. Students are also welcomed to do a show and tell with toys, pictures, and objects related to the weekly theme. 

Class Schedule:
3 minutes: Introduction and warm up
15 minutes: Learning & practicing saying vocabulary
5 minutes: Drawing & coloring
2 minutes: Wrap up

Depending on current events/happenings, the topic will be dictated weekly. Material will be the same for each class. Sample topics:
Week 1: 2D shapes: square, rectangle, triangle, circle
Week 2: Comparisons: big/small, long/short, tall/short, more/less
Week 3: Spatial Perception: inside/outside, up/down, front/back,
Week 4: Near/far, deep/shallow, Number #2
Week 5:  Left/right, thick/thin, Number #3
Week 6:  Heavy/light, Number #4
Week 7:  2D shapes: oval/ellipse, diamond/rhombus
Week 8 : Fast/slow, star, crescent
Week 9 : Pattern Recognition
Week 10: (Aug 27) Numbers and Articles

Parental Guidance
Parental support is highly encouraged since we may be working with scissors. If a learner doesn’t have a pair of scissors, we can work with playdoh/clay/building bricks/blocks or coloring pages. Play-doh may contain wheat, which could cause an allergic reaction if ingested in those sensitive to wheat gluten or with Celiac disease.
Supply List
-Crayons/markers, paper or playdoh/clay and plastic tray
-Child-friendly art scissors (only if learners are comfortable or with parental support)
