Class Experience

If your children complained about their current Mandarin Chinese is boring, too much homework, too hard to remember the characters, they are not willing to keep learning, they rejected to read books in Chinese, they feel frustrated to learn Mandarin Chinese... This class will be a new opportunity for them to keep learning. Because it's not a dry lecture telling, but it's a fun workshop with so much choices for them to practice their language skills based on learners' personal learning path.

Students will learn 300 Sight characters and 100 writing characters in this semester (4 units, 16 weeks). The textbook is the same as what they are using in China for the local students. Besides the characters, words and sentences, we'll learn strokes(笔画) and Pianpang Bushou(偏旁部首) which are the fundamentals for Chinese character writing. Poems, rhythms and fun picture books will be additional resource in our class, so that we can review and practice what we've learned repetitively. We'll use Pinyin(拼音) to help pronunciation, but it doesn't our key learning goal in this semester, because they will get the Pinyin after they know 100 character really easily. That is why the classes focus on characters at the very beginning. The whole semester will be divided into 4 units, so that it makes possible to review and repeat frequently.

The themes are different from each week, so consistent learning is encouraged.
Unit1(U1)
W1: 春节童谣/ Chinese New Year Poem
W2 :大还是小/ Big or Small
W3:项链/ Necklace
W4:雪地里的小画家/ Painter In the Snow

Class will be taught with prepared Powpoint, we may watch poems or rhythms on Youtube, class homework will be sent as attachment and/or via google classroom. We will play game to review the characters on Kahoot or Blooket. (Blooket is a similar platform as Kahoot, but more cute for young students. The game ID will be sent during each class and students could join by game link or game ID, no personal account needed)

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been living in Beijing, one of the most authentic city in China for more than 30 years, and grew up in Hutong and kept all the customs generation by generation. I taught mandarin in Oklahoma, US for 2 years and voluntarily provided Chinese culture sharing club in the local public elementary school for 3 years. I'm passionate to work with children on Chinese cultural learning and Mandarin teaching, because it's not only full of fun for me, but also meaningful for me.
