In this one-time class, students who have no prior knowledge to Mandarin Chinese will be taught the following:
- 4 tones in Mandarin Chinese
- Basic greeting with a friend (hello, goodbye, how are you, my name is, what about you?)

At the end of this lesson, we will play a Kahoot game to practice what we have just learned.

*By default, I teach in simplified Chinese characters, but if requested, I can teach in traditional Chinese characters as well!

Looking forward to meeting you!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I am Mrs. Stella/ Behmer and it's so nice to meet you! I am a mom of 2 young kids 👩‍👧and I have taught over 15 years to children between 6-15 years old. I love languages because they bond people from different backgrounds and cultures immediately when you speak the common language! I speak 3 languages fluently myself - English, Mandarin, Shanghainese (Shanghai dialect) and Cantonese. I have also learned Japanese and French before. I also eloquently read and write all of the above 4 languages! I have moved to America with my husband three years ago after we are married in Shanghai, China where we met. Since then, I have been staying at home as a mom to take care of our two beautiful and fun children!

Teaching background:
I am born and raised in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 A place that is famously known for its beautiful landscape 🏔, diverse culture🎎 , languages 🗣, delicious food 🥢, and gourmet 🍱. I grew up speaking Cantonese and Mandarin to my family and friends because my father is from Hong Kong and mother is from Shanghai, China! I went to an English dominant school and most of my friends speak English, so being a language lover, my English has been polished pretty well over the years. I graduated from Hong Kong Education University and York University in Canada and hold a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education. Besides that, I have completed teaching programs in Canada and led international children camps and English Summer Camps in multiple cities in China, like Chengdu and Shanghai. I have worked in Shanghai, China for 4 years alongside 2 local Chinese teachers in the classroom teaching grade 1-3. My job was to teach, lead and manage classrooms while communicating daily with my Chinese co-workers. On a side note, I also hold an Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 8 Certificate in Piano! I love teaching and teaching children! I have received a lot of positive feedback from parents over the years that their children enjoyed being my student, gained a lot of knowledge and had a lot of fun in my class!

Teaching Philosophy 📘 :
I learn things through touching, smelling, seeing, hearing and experiencing so I want my students to learn in the same way! I believe learning comes in different formats and methods. The more you associate to the subject, the more you learn! I also believe finding a good teacher is as crucial as the way of learning itself. If the teacher is a good and fun teacher, students will be more willing to learn and more attracted to the topic of learning. I like to incorporate songs, books, crafts and fun resources to engage my student in the lesson!

Something about me 👩
- I have a sister who is 3 years younger than me and she lives in Hong Kong🇭🇰.
- I love to eat 🍽and travel ✈️ ! I have been to more than 20 cities and countries in the world up until now! Some of my favourite cuisines around the world is Cantonese Dim Sum, Korean Barbecue, Japanese!

I hope to meet you in my class : )

Cheers,
Mrs. Stella/ Behmer
