Class Experience

I loved Malory Towers as a girl (and still do, actually)! It's a six-book series about a girl called Darrell Rivers who starts at boarding school, set in Cornwall in England. This classic series was written by Enid Blyton and first published in the late 1940s/early 1950s. So much of what she wrote still rings true today: friendship problems, family life, studying, school-life balance, developing character and more!

This class is about the first book: 'First Term at Malory Towers'. Each week we'll read some chapters (to be done in learners' own time) and then discuss the story and themes and ideas that come up. There'll also be a chance to explore and find out about the language used and place it in 1940s England along with English culture from the same era.

Class structure:
* welcome and introduction
* quick recap of the week's reading
* sharing of thoughts
* any new vocabulary
* discussing the week's theme
* close

Parental Guidance
The content of these books is appropriate for the age-range 7-11 years old. Due to the fact these books were written in the 1940s/50s, some of the language is a little archaic. While the books have been updated to lessen the few references to physical harm (eg. slapping or "boxing the ears" becomes shaking) some language or references could be considered offensive (eg. use of "fat"). All language and references such as these will be placed in the context, dealt with sensitively and all learners reminded that they are no longer considered appropriate. Adults are advised to read the books themselves before enrolling their learner.
