Class Experience

Malcolm X is often seen as a lightning rod figure in the push for black equality. He is often mischaracterized and misunderstood because of his complicated past and association with the Nation of Islam. What is often overlooked about him is the major transformation which he underwent in the last year or so of his life. Due to the fact that Malcolm X is often misunderstood, it is important for students to keep an open mind as they read and learn about Malcolm's ideas and interpretations.

In this class, we will look at Malcolm X's life with a specific focus on his last year of life. We will do so by watching the 1992 movie, "Malcolm X", based on his autobiography before the first class and reading some of his more famous speeches for subsequent classes. This class will be based on a Socratic seminar.

Week 1: Prior to this class, watch "Malcolm X," the 1992 movie directed by Spike Lee. We will discuss Malcolm X's life leading up to and through joining the Black Muslims movement.
Week 2: "Grassroots" and "Declaration of Independence"
Week 3: "The Ballot or the Bullet"
Week 4: "By Any Means Necessary"
Week 5: "At the Audubon" and "Excerpts of Interviews" Discuss the overall impact of Malcolm X for his time and today.

****Keep in mind that Malcolm X was a minister of the Black Muslim Movement (Nation of Islam), so there are references to beliefs of the Nation of Islam's faith in his speeches. We will not use these to promote his former religion, but to help us understand him and his perspectives. It will help us understand the changes in his perspective from Black separatism towards human rights.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Social Studies Center started out with Laura Forde teaching as an individual on Outschool in 2016. She is a licensed Social Studies teacher with a BS in Social Studies Education and a MS in Educational Leadership who has taught since 2003 in both North Dakota, West Virginia and online. As Outschool grew, demand for her engaging, effective classes grew as well. Now an organization of qualified teachers continue to teach the content in a similar format and engagement.

We believe that students need to be engaged and involved in their learning. In our classes, we try to give the kids new information, have them practice it, and then apply it. We also believe it is important that what is learned in class is relevant to their own lives. Having student-centered learning and a tie to their lives helps students retain what they have learned. Our subject specialties are history, government, geography, criminal law, sociology, and other social studies classes.

We love the content we teach and believe that you are never too old to learn more. We continue to challenge ourselves through professional development, books/articles, and research to always be improving and to ensure your child is given the best learning experience we can possibly deliver.
