Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
This course will teach five reading skills and three reading strategies to assist Kindergarten through 3rd graders in their reading comprehension. Reading strategies help students actively think about reading and reading skills assist in answering comprehension questions. The three strategies will be visualization, making inferences, and making connections. The five strategies will be sequence of events/retelling, summarization, main idea and details, plot, and theme. We will have discussion, hands-on activities, slides, and/or video clips to understand and reinforce these skills and strategies. Students do not need previous knowledge to be successful in understanding the content. If they have previous knowledge, this is a great refresher course. The 60 minute session will be broken down into the following segments. The first segment will be introduction for the first week and the following weeks will be review. Next will be direct instruction of the skill or strategy, then guided instruction to practice as a group. Next, will be independent instruction to allow students to apply the learned concept on their own which will allow for assessment of the skill or strategy. The session will end with a wrap up.
