Class Experience

Students will understand the definition, purpose, and use of place value and base-10.
Students will use place value understanding and properties of operations (+,-, x, / ) to perform multi-digit arithmetic
Students will improve their ability to see number patterns, compare numbers, skip count, and express familiarity with factors and multiples.
Students will use different modalities (manipulatives, drawings, and strategies) to add and subtract within 1,000 and multiply and divide within 100.
Students will learn a variety of strategies (mimicking mental math strategies) to solve equations. This will improve their ability to do mental math.
Students will learn how to read, analyze, solve and explain word problems.
Students will represent and solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including long division.
Students will understand the properties of each operation and the relationship between addition and subtraction/multiplication and division
Students will solve numeric equations and word problems involving the four operations (+,-, x, / ) and be able to explain patterns in arithmetic.
I've spent the last six years as a math teacher/interventionist at a public charter school in California. During that time, I developed my own curriculum which became "Making Mathemagicians." I taught between 50-100 students per academic semester, all of whom tested in the 20th percentile or below in standardized math tests, but who did not (at the time) qualify for special education services.

I have a background in General and Special Education, having taught both gifted and academically challenged students, as well as students with multiple diagnoses. I believe every child can learn if we meet them where they are.
Homework is not required/graded, but it is strongly encouraged that students practice, and I will upload supplemental practice and other resources to the classroom.
Students will need paper, pencil, and may need access to a printer for worksheets, activity mats, or reference sheets. Students will need some sort of manipulatives. These can be store bought, but can also consist of Legos, beans, loose change, or other similar objects. If a specific manipulative is used, I will upload examples to print and cut out.
I do not give formal grades.
However, I will provide a written evaluation suitable for a portfolio on request. Request for an evaluation must be made before the start of the second class. The student must attend a minimum of six (6) classes in order to receive evaluation.
The evaluation will include information on attendance, preparedness, participation (in class and on the discussion board), and conduct. Personal growth will also be noted.
For this class evaluation, students must provide me with samples of work taken from the supplementary materials to show their level of understanding of the concepts. These are for evaluation only, and will not be graded.
Please contact me for any further questions.
3 hours per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
I will be utilizing my own curriculum, as well as other source materials I have purchased over the years, I may also share video links, book recommendations, created supplemental materials, strategy sheets, etc. in the class or on the classroom message board.

About Me

I am a polymath, a person who has many interests and loves all kinds of learning, over many subjects. I am also an auto-didact: I love to learn on my own. so very likely, I'm a lot like you.
I have taught many subjects, but some of my favorites...
