US Grade 2 - 4
*This class will never be canceled due to low enrollment. I will teach to one learner. When individuals read text, comprehension is achieved when they have schema, or prior knowledge, relating to the topic. It's their feelings, experiences, thoughts, and opinions that help them understand what they read. I will first do a short activity to explain what schema is and how it helps us understand what we read. Next I will explain the three types of connections we have to what we read: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. Finally, I will read the story What if Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick. This relatable story is about how each person's small, everyday choices have consequences. The learners will be prompted during the story to share their connections to the text and explain how their schema helps them understand the story. Please be aware that because dialogue is learner-dependent, we may run over the timeframe listed.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I am a certified teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching elementary students. I have found such joy over the years sharing my love of children's literature, teaching literacy skills, and sharing dialogue with children about books. I teach students about different genres of literature, reading non-fiction text, and I also teach a series of lessons about the keys to reading comprehension. The hundreds of children with whom I have worked over the years have taught me that children learn most effectively when they are captivated by a topic, a teacher, or an activity. Children crave engagement and my goal is to provide that in my lessons.
