This is the 4th class in the 'Making Connections' series of reading comprehension lessons. I recommend students to take the 'Making Connections' classes in number order, although it is not essential. A different text will be studied in each class. Reading a text extract, we'll start by investigating any unknown vocabulary. Through discussion, we'll make connections between the text and what we already know, in order to gain a greater understanding of the content. We'll ask ourselves...
Students will gain a deeper understanding of the text by relating it to their own experiences and existing knowledge. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the text through discussion of their own and others' ideas. Students will learn to make sensible predictions based on what they've read and discussed. Students will learn how to summarize a text. Students will learn that these strategies can be applied to all their reading.
I teach reading comprehension to pupils aged 7-11, and have held the role of Subject Coordinator for Literacy in several schools in the UK.
4 files available upon enrollmentText and response sheet (Word/PDF) provided by the teacher before class. If you do not have access to a printer, the following materials will be sufficient: pen / pencil paper / notebook.
