Class Experience

This class will examine color vocabulary, systems, dimensions, and harmonies. In addition, color psychology, color perception, and personal color analysis will also be viewed. I utilize an active learning process where students will be able to view and do as I instruct. Class time will be divided up as follows - a short lecture on the history of color showing slides that will emphasize important points. The bulk of the class is visual learning. I utilize color drapes to discuss the color draping process that a stylist will use to determine your true colors and determine your personal color analysis. The conclusion of the class will end with a summary of how to build your own personal palette. The main discussion takeaways will include the color wheel, warm and cool color schemes, natural hues, color temperature, value range, color harmonies, and concluding with image makers and breakers. The students will be able to use the essentials of color as building blocks to effective wardrobe planning. Color, used wisely, can enhance any wardrobe and become a significant part of your personal style. No prior knowledge needed from the learners; just a sincere desire to learn something new.

Learning Goals

*Define and state the pure pigments.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I’d like to say I’ve had a passion for fashion my entire life. I majored in Home Economics at Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio. My Home Ec degree, (now more aptly termed Retailing), provided me with many career choices. I’ve been a buyer for a major department store, a merchandise coordinator, a sales representative for major fashion vendors Levis Strauss & Co., GAP, and Ellen Tracy, an image consultant, personal stylist, fashion blogger, program chair of fashion design at a career academy, entrepreneur, and image management textbook author. Always eager to learn more and meeting new people, I achieved a Masters Degree in Training & Development in 2006 from Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL. I’ve been able to utilize my graduate degree in my image consulting firm, Fine Threads, established in 1999. I developed courses on appearance, behavior, and communication skills. My first book, Your Personal Style, was released in March 2009, and is available through Fairchild Publications or Amazon.com. Outside of work I enjoy the city of Chicago; the lakefront, unique retail shops, and the diversity of the people. I enjoy a great Sunday afternoon brunch and movie, live music, bike riding, Bikram yoga, reading fashion magazines, and dancing.
