Average rating:4.8Number of reviews:(46)
Learners will be supported in developing their creativity, an understanding of art forms and a better understanding of themselves.

Class experience

Students will gain a foundational understanding of art and architecture through discussion and art-making. They will learn SEL competencies, and how these areas connect with art. Students will develop writing skills and their own individual creativity.
I have many years experience working as an educator; most recently as an Arts and Intervention Specialist (focused on SEL) in the public schools. Last Summer and Fall, I did my coursework at City University-Seattle, towards my certification in Special Education; my courses included topics such as SEL and social equity. I'll be getting my certification in 2021, with a focus on working with autistic children; using art and SEL strategies. I'm presently taking further courses at National University in SEL as professional development. Two years ago, I was invited to take a professional development course called Teaching Artist Lab sponsored in part by the NEA, which focused on social equity.
Learners will be encouraged to have a journal for class.
1. Watercolor set (a simple 6 to 8 color set is fine)
2. Thicker paper to use with watercolor
3. Brushes for watercolor
4. Poster board 22" x 28" (several pieces)
5. Pencil
6. Markers
7. Glue stick
8. Tape
9. Scissors
10. Found objects around the house such as pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, buttons etc.
11. Magazine images, and other images important to learner
12. Materials that are recycled such as cans (TO BE HANDLED SAFELY) cardboard etc.
13. Templates (these are provided and will be sent for parents to download and print)
14. Any other art materials that learner likes to use
Parents will have access to the video recordings, as well as be communicated with regularly. My focus is on creating a safe, calm, and comfortable environment.

This class contains abstract concepts that some learners obtain more easily than others. Please take your child’s ability to learn such concepts into account when making your decision to sign up for this class.
