What's included
6 live meetings
5 in-class hoursClass Experience
Over 6 meetings, kids will learn about architecture and it's relationship to art - towards making their own city! This is an expansion course and will include new aspects such as sustainability and livability, along with more detailed presentational materials. Kids will experience city planning, model making (using free downloadable templates), and art making processes such as drawing, painting, collage - to create a city model using art and design skills. Classes begin with multi-media presentations to include intros to Urban Planning, Architectural History, Contemporary Architecture, Environmental Energy + Transportation and Public Art. Focus is on process, not product. The class will begin with designing a city plan with energy source and transportation, and the second week and third weeks will be for adding architecture and public art. The class culminates in a presentation of learners work that I will create using images of their cities. This will become a .pdf that parents can keep. The class is designed to include SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) components such as Self-Awareness and Problem-solving skills.
Learning Goals
Kids will learn about architectural design, history and materials, interior design, model making, city planning, public art, shape, scale, color, collage and SEL skills. The course includes National Visual Arts Standards.

SEL is the process of learning social and emotional skills. It's just as important as learning reading and math. Social-emotional skills are essential for success in school, work, life. Students learn to manage their emotions, have empathy, solve problems, make responsible decisions and maintain healthy relationships.
My philosophy is to create an online education environment that feels safe, calming, and is focused on the needs of the student. I believe every student has innate creativity, and I'm very committed to supporting students to develop that. My interest is in empowering the student by letting the creative process fuel their individual interests and to support them to solve their own problems and challenges. Humor is very important! I love animals and are happy to have students have their pets nearby them as we work online.
I've been teaching for many years; in museum education, as an undergraduate professor and as a K-12 teacher in the public schools. I have a Masters in Art, have taken Teachers Certification training in Special Education in WA state, and am working on another Masters in Education with a focus on SEL. I have a special interest in working with neurodiverse learners, learners that have experienced trauma and LGBTQ learners.
