Class Experience

Students will learn how to make their own sensory bottles with both recycled and craft materials by following step-by-step directions AND also given time to experiment and test on their own.

Students will experiment with the interaction between oil and water. Students will also learn about color mixing during the activity. At the end of the activity students will have at least one sensory bottle (more if they would like to create more) to aid in calming and help with anxiety.

Make sure your student has AT LEAST the required materials. Recommended materials are based on what you may have available or what your students are able to find in and outside your home!
The following materials are required*:
- At least one empty water bottle/pop(soda) bottle with a screw on cap - (More if you want to make more than one!)
-Water
-Oil (Baby oil or light colored vegetable oil work best) ($2.00-$4.00)
-Water-Based Liquid Food Coloring ($3.50-$5.00) - Red/Blue/Yellow
-Candy Food Coloring ($5.00-$8.00)Red/Blue/Yellow)

*Pricing based on Amazon, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, Michaels current prices*

The following materials are recommended or suggested (You won't need all of these! Think about what you'd like to include in your sensory bottle!):
-Glitter or Larger Sequins ($2.00 - 7.00)
- Small plastic objects/letters/shapes of your choosing.
- Pine needles, flower petals, flowers, acorns, small shells
- Hot Glue Gun (and an adult to help you!) to seal your bottle when you finish!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified elementary school teacher with additional endorsements in special education and gifted and talented education. I received my BA in Interdisciplinary Arts for Children with a focus in Theatre from the State University of New York at Brockport. Then, I received my Masters of Education in Inclusive Early Childhood and Elementary Education with additional coursework in Gifted and Talented Education from Nazareth College. I also have a second Masters Degree in Educational Psychology Giftedness and Talent Development from the University of Connecticut and the NEAG School of Education. I have over 13 years of experience working with children of all ages, including high school level Model United Nations Programs. I hold teaching certifications in both New York State and Connecticut, and I am constantly seeking out new learning opportunities and passing on my love of life-long learning to my students.

My wide and varied teaching experiences span more than ten years, three different states, multiple levels, and students whose ages have ranged from preschool to high school. I believe that all students have the potential to learn at high levels and that giftedness and talents occur across all cultures, disciplines, and socio-economic levels. I am a Renzulli minded teacher, believing that all students should have opportunities for personalized learning, and the chance to learn through their individual interests and strengths. Enriching and engaging material helps students to achieve their best. My goal is for all of my students to find their passion in their learning, and to direct it towards experiences which will help them to grow into productive members of our society. I strive to practice inclusion and diversity and create an environment where learners are able to express their opinions and listen to the opinions of others. As such, I try to ask questions that will challenge learners to look things from a variety of viewpoints.
