45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one-time class, we will make colorful paper flowers together starting from a cardboard base. Students will learn how to shape and cut petals from cardstock, attach them with hot glue to a round cardboard base, and add detail to create a variety of different types of flowers -- or to invent their own kinds of flowers! I will demonstrate a number of different techniques for cutting petals, leaves, and the pistils & stamen of the flower, and then we will use the remaining class time to make as many flowers as the learners would like. Ideally, they will learn techniques in order to be able to continue to craft on their own after class has ended. I will also show them things that they can do with these paper flowers, such as creating a flower wreath to hang on a wall or other space. For this class, students should be able to independently use scissors as well as a hot glue gun. Hot glue dries faster and has a much stronger bond than glue or glue sticks, particularly with cardstock, which makes it ideal for this project. (If you have a learner outside of the class age range who is interested in this class, or one who is nervous about using a hot glue gun, please feel free to reach out to me for recommendations and ideas.) My teaching style has been described as interactive, encouraging, and supportive. I use paper flowers that I have created that I display via the camera during class rather than using a slideshow. I encourage questions from learners, either verbally or via the chat depending on the learner's level of comfort with interaction, and learners are always welcome to interact in whatever way is most comfortable for them. I believe in meeting students where they're at, especially for art classes, and want them to have fun while learning new content and techniques.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to design and assemble various types of paper flowers. We'll go over various cutting and curling techniques to create different types of flowers while also talking about the correct terms for parts of a flower (petals, stamen, etc.). We'll talk about complimentary and contrasting colors, and learners will be encouraged to design their own types of flowers.
Other Details
Supply List
For this class learners will need: -- cardstock in a variety of colors (you're welcome to use whatever colors you like, though we will use black for the inner part of the flowers. Regular paper will work, but cardstock tends to last longer and be easier to use with the hot glue) -- scissors, for cutting the paper -- a hot glue gun and a few glue sticks (hot glue works best as glue or glue sticks won't hold the cardstock together) -- cardboard cut into small circles to use as the base of the flower -- a pencil, for curling paper -- a flat place to work on this project
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello! My name is Anne (she/her) and I am an artist and educator based in New England, USA. I've worked as an educator in a variety of settings ranging from afterschool arts programming to hands-on science programming to speaking and presentation skills with non-native speakers of English. My academic background is in English literature and popular culture, but I have a wide range of teaching interests.
As a non-traditional learner myself, I believe that people learn in many different ways, so it is vital to meet students where they're at. Education should be interesting and engaging.
I am available for a variety of arts-based classes (including developing new classes) as well as private tutorials; please feel free to message if either of those are of interest to you or your learner. I do tend to hold classes even with lower enrollment numbers, and am happy to schedule additional sections depending on scheduling and needs. My goal is to have the classroom be an inclusive, supportive environment that encourages creativity and creative thinking.
A fun fact about me: I've been a roller derby referee for over ten years!
I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!
