ART CLASS: Pop-Up Basics: The Basic Beak. Make Pop-Up Face Cards! Paper Crafts
Class experience
Pop-ups never fail to elicit "ooh"s and "aah"s - they're like magic! In this class, I'll teach students how to make one of the main pop-up forms, the triangle/basic beak. After exploring some of its possibilities, we'll use those skills to create a set of pop-up face cards with mouths that open and close. I can also demonstrate how kids can connect them to create more of a book. Although we may start decorating in class, it's likely students will be working on the pictures in this book long...
Students will learn to use the basic box pop-up technique to create triangular pop-ups that can be used in many different types of images.
I've been making books since I was a child, and teaching kids to make books for the past 20 years. I pride myself on offering clear instruction and tricks to help kids not just make these books with me online, but make them on their own later on!
MATERIALS LIST: Please make sure you have these materials available for class. -PAPER: * At LEAST 8 sheets of the same size paper, ideally 9"x12" (construction paper) or 8.5"x11" (copy/printer paper - doesn't work as well because it's lighter-weight; heavier-weight paper is preferable). It can be the same or different colors; more than one color provides more visual interest. However, using all one color is ok - you can always decorate it later. (A NOTE ON CONSTRUCTION PAPER: cheaper construction paper with a very fibrous feel tends to fold very poorly and create less-than-satisfying results. I recommend using Tru-Ray construction paper, by Pacon.) Some of this may be used for collage; you may have some left over. * Scrap paper to put on the table while using the glue stick! Examples of good paper to use as scrap: junk mail or catalogs; used copy paper; glossy newspaper circulars. (Note, do NOT use regular newspaper - the print rubs off on hands and books!) OTHER MATERIALS: *-A popsicle/craft stick to use as a folding tool to make extra sharp creases (if you don't have one, a butter knife can work...but if you're using a butter knife, it must not be serrated - the edge needs to be completely smooth and blunt!) - if you can't access either, then a ruler could work! *-A glue stick (In general I always recommend the large size, 1.27oz, any brand, preferably not the kind that goes on purple. The larger ones have better coverage, and last much longer). If it's not a brand new glue stick, please check before class to make sure it's not sticky or dried out. If you only have a smaller glue stick, and/or it's purple, that will work too (however, if you are in the market for a new one, I recommend a large white one!) *Pencil *Scissors *Markers, colored pencils and/or crayons to decorate the faces - but please note that a lot of the decorating will likely happen after class is over! I look forward to meeting you soon! Best, Stephanie
