Class Experience

Ever wanted to make your own adventure games? This fun course will walk you, step-by-step through the process of planning, designing, coding, creating and finally saving your games.

Each week students will watch a detailed learning video, complete a learning checklist and parts of a coding workbook. They will take steps during the week to build their game and at the end of each week present their progress for evaluation and peer assessment.

This is a flexible learning class so there are no live meetings, learning takes place with the printable workbooks, pre-recorded videos, class interaction and presentations. As the teacher I will be on hand to answer questions within 24 hours of posting and open to holding live discussions should students need additional support.

This course includes:
Week 1: In this week's lesson we will learn about adventure games and what they include. We will be planning our games, preparing the required equipment and organising our files in preparation for creating our games. This week's learning will include class discussion of the best way to plan a game, submission of planning work and critique of other learners' plans.

Week 2: In this week's lesson we will be creating the backgrounds and characters for our games. The learning this week will consist of a learning video with demonstrations of how to create pictures, detailed discussions on what makes a good character in the OutSchool classroom, followed by learners swapping characters for improvement suggestions.

Week 3: This week the actual building of the game will take place. Learners will be adding in their backgrounds and beginning to understand the concepts of creating a game. Learners will be expected to complete and submit their game progress as well as fill in and submit their workbooks for assessment. Students will be expected to support each other this week with "trouble shooting" groups to solve problems together - which creates independent learners

Week 4: In week 4 we will be adding in our game players and instructing their movement within the game, this requires the learners to work together to learn various ways players interact with a game. We will also be continuing to fill in our work books for assessment.

Week 5: This week's learning involves adding an inventory system to our games. The learners will complete an online assessment this week and submit it to the classroom for grading. We will also be discussing any issues that have arisen during our game development

Week 6: In week six we will be moving onto the use of game maps as well as interactive dialogue in our games, each step of the game building process will be explained and discussed to ensure understanding and learners will be able to support each other.

Week 7: In this week we will be rounding up the final parts of our games. Posting videos of the game play and watching other people's videos to give feedback and support. We will also be finishing off our workbooks and discussing the next steps in our game creation adventures

Week 8: In our final week we will be testing each other's games and bug fixing. This week we will also learn about how to export a game to different platforms such as mobile phone apps, Facebook games or web pages.

This course walks the learner through everything they need to do step by step to create their games and requires interaction with the rest of the class for learning and growth as a game developer.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to create a game and the basics of game coding.
