Make Your First Roblox Game With a Pro Game Designer

Make your first Roblox Game in this 5-day Summer camp hosted by a pro game designer for beginners ages 7-12.

Homework
1 hour per week. Optional: learners will have access to more advanced, self-paced tutorials and guides to explore topics and tools that are not covered in camp. Available tutorials cover advanced modeling, scripting, and more.
Assessment
Learners will receive peer feedback in the form of play-testing. At the end of camp, learners will play each other's games and rate their experience.
Grading
At the end of camp, learners will play each other's games and grade their experience. Every player will anonymously grade each other's game in four criteria on a scale of 1-5 and leave constructive feedback. Grades and feedback will be privately shared with each player after camp has concluded. Peer Feedback Rubric: — Fun: on a scale of 1-5, how fun was the game? — Challenge: on a scale of 1-5, how challenging was the game? — Scale: on a scale of 1-5, how big was the game?

Beginner Level
This 5-day Summer camp teaches beginners how to create Roblox obstacle course games in Roblox Studio, Roblox's free game creation tool available on all Mac or Windows computers. 

The camp is project-based and covers foundational game design principles, tools, and skills by guiding learners through creating their first game. Each session covers a new topic and skill like modeling, scripting, and play-testing.

Each session is split into two portions. The first portion is an interactive workshop, where learners receive direct instruction and tutorials on principles and tools. The second portion is an interactive lab, where learns apply their new knowledge into practice in their games.

Syllabus

over 1 Week
Lesson 1:
Intro to Roblox Studio
 Learners will get familiar with how to use Roblox Studio, Roblox's free game engine and creation tool. They'll learn how to set up their games using a pre-built template, get familiar with the Studio Editor's interface, enable Roblox's collaboration features to build together, and cover the basics of game creation with checkpoints, spawn points, and camera movement.

Lesson 2:
Intro to Modeling
 Learners will get an introduction to modeling. They'll learn about point lights, color editing, material customization, and using the transform tool.

Intro to Scripting
 Learners will get an introduction to scripting. They'll learn about variables, conditional logic, loops, arrays, dictionaries, functions and events.

Lesson 4:
Intro to Playtesting
 Learners will get an introduction to play testing. They'll learn how game designers test and iterate on their games by participating in interactive demos and feedback sessions with their peers.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
You will need to help your child download and setup Roblox Studio on their computer before camp. It takes 10 minutes, is free to download, and does not require any technical experience. Learners will also privately share their game tags with the teacher.
