Class Experience

Have you ever read a book and fell in love with a character? Have you ever read a book and hated the characters? Were they underdeveloped or not developed? Were you able to connect with the character? Did the character contribute nothing to the story?
Did you ever say I could have written that character better? I would have changed this or that and the story would have been so much better. Would you like to learn the steps to creating a lovable protagonist or an antagonist that people love to hate?
Join me in a three week workshop where I will work with you to create believable characters. Let me show you how to develop characters that readers will love and keep on reading until the very end.

Learning Goals

In Week One we will fill out a basic character questionnaire on a favorite character together.

In Week Two we will go over the characters and as a group critique your character and make suggestions to improve what you have created.
After that I will show you how to dig deeper. We will discuss the characters inside story by looking at a favorite character.
1 .What are the characters expectations?
All stories make a point. As a writer you need to know what the point is. What is the source of the protagonist’s internal conflict?
2. Whose story is it?
3. Why does your protagonist care?
What will the events in your story mean to your character?
4. What is your protagonists worldview?
What events from their past will the character turn to as she decodes the present?
5. What’s next?
How has the protagonist’s worldview been skewed and how does the character move forward.
6. When does the story start?
What event will give your character no alternative but to move forward?

In Week Three we will review the homework. I will give advice on how to get the characters to the beginning of the story, carry the story to the end and the point of the story. I will answer any questions the students may have about going forward.
Students will be able to put a character into their story and let the reader see what motivates the character to do the things they do.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Through teaching my previous classes on character and writing I have discovered that the students need to explore adding description to their own stories. I think by breaking the writing process down into its specific ingredients I can give the students a strong base to write their own stories.
