*THIS IS THE SECTION FOR AGES 8-10 - if you have an 8-year-old, feel free to put them in either this section OR in the section for 6-8 - whatever fits your needs or schedule! Here's the link for 6-8: https://outschool.com/classes/make-art-from-mistakes-and-imagination-creativity-club-fostering-growth-mindset-SaZIVR2r#usvmadas0y SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS THIS? This club is based on my single session class ( https://outschool.com/classes/making-art-from-mistakes-and-imagination-creative-prompts-for-art-play-VS29xdSL?sectionUid=a992c26a-a00e-40a1-ac7a-ff793e4dccf2#usvmadas0y ) - and the overarching idea is that some truly fun and wonderful moments happen when kids allow their imaginations free reign without any pressure to create a particular thing. One thing artists everywhere have in common is that they experiment and make mistakes, and often find joy in the process. Indeed, we won't be doing any prescribed artwork in this class - every artist's artwork will be unexpected and look different from the art other kids create! I use some simple art prompts to help kids create art from the unexpected, and we often end up making up little stories about our artwork - it almost always leads to silliness and laughter. The single-session class was such fun that I wanted to repeat it every week - hence, the club! It's one of my favorite half-hours of the week, hands down. In addition to art prompts, I will sometimes add in in some story- or wordplay, simple prompts to help the kids invent stories together, which they can also use as inspiration for artwork. As I say in the single-session class listing: finished artworks may not be refrigerator-worthy - this is process vs product, very much about exploration and finding joy in the unexpected. Kids may not end up wanting to keep anything but the experience! But sometimes the results are just wonderful and joyful. (The class photo posted was created by a 6yo artist in one of my classes.) WHAT MIGHT A SESSION LOOK LIKE? A sample week might look like this: -I give a prompt for kids to create a certain kind of mark or modify their paper in some way, OR I might give a verbal prompt like asking kids to all contribute an action word or a certain part of speech that we mix up to start a storyline -quick discussion of how that might inspire a project -open work time and chatting for 20ish minutes -we may spend the last 5-10 minutes sharing - but in this class, we tend to chat and share throughout, making up stories all the while, so there may not be an official "sharing" time! WHAT ART MATERIALS DO I NEED? We will mostly stick to simple art materials - markers/crayons/colored pencils/construction & drawing paper, but students can feel free to use other materials if they like, like watercolor paints or other materials they are fond of. Some weeks we will use scissors, and tape or glue stick.I will make sure to give you notice if I am thinking about adding anything unexpected to the mix or want kids to use a particular art material. HOW DOES AN ONGOING CLASS WORK? It's a 'subscription' model - you have to subscribe to join and try the class, but it's not a binding subscription. Students may join or leave at any time. Feel free to try a session by subscribing; if it's a great fit for your learner, feel free to keep your subscription and join us every week! OUTSCHOOL RULES OF NOTE: -Although siblings are welcome to share a camera, each individual learner must be registered. -Cameras must be on to verify students in the beginning of class, and I prefer students to keep them on during class. -Adults may be nearby, but may not appear on camera. I hope to see your child in class!
Learning Goals
Students will find delight in allowing their imaginations to run wild! Shy students or students who might find it more challenging to make art for fear of mistakes tend to drop their guard and enjoy themselves thoroughly when the pressure to produce has been lifted.

I'm a teaching arist and museum education with a BFA in illustration/graphic communication, an MAT in art education, more than 22 years of art teaching experience but MOST important...a love of laughter and silliness!
