Students will learn how to set up, enter words into, and index a personal vocabulary book that they can add to over time and which will stand them in good stead as a meaningful personal resource throughout their lifelong learning journeys.

Class experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Students will build a robust tool for learning new words, and create a resource which will make it easy for them to enter words into that will provide an easy personalised retrieval system for learning new words.

They will increase their appreciation of and ability to work with language, enhancing their ability to integrate spelling, and grammar, and link word formations and origins to history and awareness of different cultures (Latin, Greek, Germanic, French, Proto-Indo-European, etc).
Homework Offered
No specific homework is assigned. However, the more a student engages with their vocabulary book as an exercise after the class, the more useful the resource will be for them in their on-going learning journey. A parent-devised system of rewards for home-based learners can work well in the initial stages to boost engagement in some cases.

Assessments Offered
Grades Offered
For this class, students will need to get a small notebook ideally with at least 200 pages to use specifically for a vocabulary book.
I recommend a note book of this type: (UK size: A6; US size: Junior Legal).

They will need a standard stationery kit - pencil, eraser, sharpener, ruler and access to a computer to look up definitions of words on line.

An over-ear gaming-type set of headphones with built-on microphone and a noise-cancelling feature is recommended for best audio quality for communication in classes.

Please note that unless students have a very good reason not to have their video on during class, I expect students to be visible and participate actively in classes I teach. The digital classroom is a social space shaped by our intentions and our activity - and I encourage participants to actively build the kind of space they feel comfortable in, and to actively work on creating a space in which others can also feel comfortable being and acting in. Outschool does provide a 'verification' system for those who have good reasons not to participate visually, and I will respect and support that fully. Please consult https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/4063624-learner-verification for further information and contact 'verification@outschool.com' at least a week before the start of your first class to allow time for the verification process to be completed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
