Class Experience

Everyone has that favorite Halloween movie they see every year! Make your own spooky (or not so spooky) short movie you can enjoy year after year during this season.

In this jam-packed, practical course, students will (in 4 classes*) learn the basics of movie making as they go through the process of making their own short Halloween film. The final class will be a virtual film festival for the students where they will share their final projects.

Each class will focus on one or two aspects of filmmaking. The class time will include interactive instruction, quick in-class activities, Q & A, after-class assignments and ongoing final project check-ins. Questions for the instructor regarding assignments or the final project can be posted on the Classroom.

Assignments will be given each day with two primary objectives: 1) reinforce the day's topics 2) move forward on each student's final project. Assignments should be uploaded to the Classroom as PDFs for documents and .MOVs or .MP4s for video assignments.

This bootcamp is designed to give students a foundational knowledge of the filmmaking process with an emphasis placed on "guided-learning-by-doing."

Students will need to have access to a digital video camera (smart phone is fine) and will need to have access to video editing software.*

It is highly recommended (but not required) that students have a free YouTube account ( or similar) where they can upload their videos. Follow the links below for help on how to create an account.

*A handout will be provided before the bootcamp begins that will include a course outline, daily assignments, and final project description as well a resource list with free tools to help in the filmmaking process (including video editing software).

Parental Guidance
With parental permission, students are recommended to set up a YouTube account to upload their videos. YouTube requires students to be 13+ to create their own account. Videos uploaded to YouTube can be set up as "UNLISTED." To turn in video assignments, students will need to share the Unlisted video link. An Unlisted video has a shareable link to the video and is neither visible nor searchable to the public.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach classes centered around creative expression, experiential exploration, and practical skills development.

Some of my favorite classes to teach are:
How to Make a Movie: Big Ideas to Brass Tacks (and Everything in Between)
Love Learning to Learn: How to Build a Lifelong Passion for Learning
Teach Your Parents How to Travel Better: Day Trips to Family Vacations
From Idea to Product: How You Can Create A New Product!

I have over a decade of experience teaching K-12 students and particularly enjoy teaching creative writing, film workshops, and musical theatre, as well as leading choirs and orchestras. I have written scripts, directed movies, and worked on sets for TV shows, feature films, commercials, and music videos. I hold a BA in Music and a MFA in Film Production.

Over the past 12 years, I have traveled to over 50 countries on six continents. During that time, I documented (through photos, videos, and the written word) my experiences with the many people I met, and with the cultures, cities and sites I visited. I also designed, created, and produced a new travel product.

When I teach, I have three primary goals:
1. Ensure my students master the fundamentals of the course subject matter.
2. Help them practice the skills they are learning.
3. Offer practical tips and ideas for ways they can use their new knowledge in the future.

I have 12 nieces and nephews, aged 2 to 16, and a 9 month old son. There is nothing more rewarding than to see them all together, sharing what they are learning, and using their imaginations to create new things: stories, music, games and more. My classes aim to produce similar results.

Bonus fun fact about me: From berry to bean, I am fascinated with all that it takes to make a great cup of coffee.
