Description

Class Experience

As an engineer, I quickly learned the value of dimensional analysis. It's a concept that is lost on a lot of students, simply because it typically isn't emphasized throughout middle school and high school. I start to emphasize unit conversions and dimensional analysis in my middle school science, math and STEM classes. That way, the concepts are more likely to become second nature by the time my students encounter them again in high school. Even outside of engineering, I have found myself using dimensional analysis over and over in my every day life. Math knowledge for the win!
 1 file available upon enrollment
A pdf is provided that includes a concept review, practice problems, a step-by-step procedure, a data sheet, a calculations page and a "Results and Discussion" worksheet. Students will need a ruler, a calculator (a basic, four-function calculator is fine for this activity!), and a pencil.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
