In this one-time class, we’ll draw a colorful two-tiered cake and hand-letter “Happy Birthday” to create a celebratory and fun birthday card.

Together, we will create an exciting birthday card, starting with a two-tiered cake with colorful frosting and candles. We’ll add some flare with a hand-lettered “Happy Birthday” greeting at the top of the card, and fun elements. Students can choose whatever color palette they prefer based on their intended recipient. Students will be guided step-by-step and given creative liberty to change and adapt their compositions as we draw together. Card stock is preferred for this class as we’re aiming to create a sturdy and foldable card. ***Please note, some students may not have time to finish coloring their card in class depending on their optimal drawing speed. I will work at a steady pace and frequently gage where students are at during the lesson. It is my goal to help them finish their drawing, but sometimes this doesn’t allow for coloring completion before class is over. Thank you for understanding.***

Students will work on following creative direction, realistic and creative drawing, balance of composition, and some color theory.

Supply List
One piece of white card stock, a good pencil with an eraser, a fine tip black marker for defining and outlining, coloring tools with various preferred colors (markers, crayons, colored pencils, pastels, etc.), and a positive attitude.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Weekly, we drew various compositions ranging from seasonal landscapes, wild animals, nature, and portraits. Students enjoyed learning skills to create realistic drawings while adding as much flare and creative variation as they liked. Watching students enjoy making art and grow in their own confidence was truly a priceless gift. In addition to teaching art, I am an artist and have an art studio in my home.
