What's included
Homework
1 hour per week. Students are encouraged to share their responses to the videos' 'Big Question' each week, but this remains optional. My main wish is for students to enjoy soaking up the stories and facts in the videos.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
In this Flex class, we will be learning about five of the most awe-inspiring goddesses of Greek Mythology: Hera, Athena, Artemis, Demeter and Aphrodite. Flex classes have *NO LIVE LESSONS*. In each of the five weeks, I will share a 15-20 minute video, which is packed with wisdom, weirdness, facts, embarrassing sound effects and stories, relating to each goddess. For each goddess, we will explore: - Their birth stories - Appearance and temperament - Their family - Two of their famous myths, in depth - One lesser-known myth about them - A Big Question The class is designed to be supportive for students who are new to myth, whilst climbing towards lots of depth even for those who have done lots of reading, or have spent time in my live Greek of the Week classes. I encourage you to engage with each other in the Outschool classroom, and share your activity responses after each video. My style of delivery is rich, funny and interactive - by doing it in this way, we can actually go very deep into the academic study of myth, without losing the enjoyment at how frankly odd the stories are. Students need no experience, but will probably enjoy the topic more if they have some basic knowledge of Greek Myth. This could come from having read Percy Jackson, listened to the 'Greeking Out' podcast or reading great old books of myths such as D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths.
Learning Goals
You will deepen your knowledge of the five major goddesses of Greek Mythology: Hera, Athena, Artemis, Demeter and Aphrodite.
You will learn fifteen myths, some of which are more well-known and some that I am sure you will be learning for the first time.

Parental Guidance
Greek Mythology - by definition - contains lots of tales of war and conflict. As I do in my live classes, I ensure that I strike the correct balance for the age group, and all content is age-appropriate.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a specialist teacher of poetry and mythology, working both on Outschool and in schools in East London, England, where I teach Homer's Iliad to 500+ children aged 8-11 each year. I am a published children's author of educational fiction and non-fiction, with two titles being explicitly about mythology - 'Myths Don't Frighten Me' and 'Legends of Land and Sky'.
I am a qualified primary school teacher, and have been teaching since 2011 in East London. I have experience as a classroom teacher and as an Assistant Headteacher. All of this experience empowers me to teach highly effectively, and to guide deep and challenging learning conversations with children aged 8+ in ways that are humorous, intellectual and supportive.
