Magnets, Electrical Circuits and Electromagnets
In this five week hands-on course, we will explore magnetism and electricity using various materials together. Students will explore what magnets can do, how to build series and parallel circuits, and how to create electromagnets.

Intermediate Level
Week 1: What are properties of magnets? Explore magnetic attraction, repulsion, polarity, distance, and induced magnetism. Materials: Four magnets, coins, paperclips, paper, plastic tray, and various household objects Week 2: Electricity: How do we create a circuit? Build a circuit to turn on lightbulbs. Materials: D-cell batteries, mini-flashlight bulbs, alligator clip wires, battery holders and mini lightbulb holders, and two switches Week 3: What conducts electricity? Test various objects to see if they serve as conductors or insulators. Materials: Aluminum foil, coins, paperclips paper, plastic, spoons, alligator clip wires, mini lightbulb batteries, battery, battery holder, string, mini-motors, compass Week 4: Which kind of circuit produces brighter lights? Build series and parallel circuits to compare. Materials Alligator clip wires, mini light bulbs, batteries, light bulb holders and battery holders Week 5: How do we create an electromagnet? Create a magnet that can be turned on or off with electricity. Materials: batteries, a large bolt, insulated wires, and mini washers or small/medium paperclips, and battery holders
