Magical Adventures Book Club will be classes where fantasy novels and stories that include mythical creatures will be explored. In this 4-part weekly class, join others in this Book Club focusing on book 3 of the Emily Windsnap series, Emily Windsnap and the Castle in the Mist by Liz Kessler. The Emily Windsnap series is perfect for upper elementary grade readers--those who love fiction, fantasy, mermaids, and a wonderful tale of courage and bravery. As an author, Kessler writes fictional storytelling that hooks all readers from the start, with her vivid imagery and sensory language. Being introduced to the series from my own daughter who "loved mermaids", I dove into the books myself, loved it (even as an adult), and thus introduced them to kids. As a previous elementary school librarian, this was a book that couldn't stay out of the hands of lovers of mermaids and magical creatures! The FORMAT of the club will be a class discussion. Students are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and discuss openly in the classroom. The discussion will be guided by the teacher and the students. This is a social class for learners to have fun while sharing their love of a great book. HOMEWORK: At home, students will read the assigned pages each week, and be ready to discuss it in the book club. --See assigned pages in the homework section below. To fully benefit from each class and discussion the weekly book must have been read before the start of each class. With a 4th-grade reading level around 200 pages, most kids get very wrapped into the adventure that they don't want to put the book down, so they are able to complete the required reading rather quickly. Reading is NOT required before the first class but students are required to have a copy of the book. Reading will need to be completed for the 2nd class. Students are welcome to access the work by audio, print, or digital copy. --------- ABOUT THE SERIES: "A young girl learns she’s half mermaid and plunges into a scheme to reunite with her father in this entrancing, satisfying tale that beckons readers far below the waves. For as long as she can remember, twelve-year-old Emily Windsnap has lived on a boat. And, oddly enough, for just as long, her mother has seemed anxious to keep Emily away from the water. But when Mom finally agrees to let her take swimming lessons, Emily makes a startling discovery — about her own identity, the mysterious father she’s never met, and the thrilling possibilities and perils shimmering deep below the water’s surface. With a sure sense of suspense and richly imaginative details, first-time author Liz Kessler lures us into a glorious undersea world where mermaids study shipwrecks at school and Neptune rules with an iron trident — an enchanting fantasy about family secrets, loyal friendship, and the convention-defying power of love." ---Amazon ABOUT BOOK 3: "The magic ring that Emily Windsnap - half mermaid, half ordinary girl - finds buried in the sand belongs to Neptune, and he wants it back. But the ring, once on, won't come off, and an angry Neptune sends Emily's boat spinning away across the sea. When it comes to rest, she and her best friend, Shona, can see a mysterious castle shimmering in the mist on the horizon...Another magical adventure full of fun and friendship!" --Amazon ---------- Reading PACING Guide: Class 1: ● Reading due: None. As a previous elementary school librarian, this was a book that couldn't stay out of the hands of lovers of mermaids and magical creatures!
As a librarian, much of my day was finding the perfect book for each child. For some, the love of reading doesn't come naturally, so through relationships, intuition, and extensive personal reading of kids' literature, I found each kiddo's gem of a book. It was and continues to be my passion--to inspire the love of reading.
