US Grade 1 - 3
Read with us as the Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie all the way to the moon- in the future! Will they be able to complete their task before the air in their oxygen tanks runs out? In each class, we will be reading and discussing the story "Midnight on the Moon." We will read/discuss 2 chapters and complete an activity in class. There will be comprehension homework after each class. We will read the chapters together in class. Before each class I will ask for volunteers to read and I will write those names down. Every single student who wants to read will have a chance to read out loud. I will not call on children who are not comfortable reading, but I will encourage the students to have their name on my read-a-loud list. If there are no students who feel comfortable reading, I will read the chapter. This class provides a good opportunity for students to continue to practice reading out loud and discussing a book in a small group. It also gives them a chance to practice reading a chapter book and practice reading fluency. At the end of the book, students will make a poster or similar project to share what they have learned and enjoyed. An example of a book project is in the classroom materials, along with the reading journal and a special (optional) "challenge" activity. I would recommend finding a small group of friends to take this class together so that they can discuss the book outside of class. 5 minutes- go over homework 10 minutes- Read-a-loud, discussion 5 minutes- comprehension activity Day 1: Chapters 1 and 2- Jack's Notebook (the moon) Day 2: Chapters 3 and 4- Jack's Notebook (gravity) Day 3: Chapters 5 and 6- Jack's Notebook (meteorites) Day 4: Chapters 7 and 8- All about the Moon Man Day 5: Chapters 9 and 10- Character Analysis - What did they each do and why? Day 6: Share book projects. Class discussion- Where would you want to go in the treehouse and why?
