Class Experience

This class is designed to provide students the opportunity to play Magic the Gathering Commander format with others who enjoy the game. Classes will include a topic of the day discussion (related to the Commander format), game play with others, and a summary discussion and analysis of game play.

Topics of the day may include; principles of deck building, sportsmanship, newly released cards or any other Commander related subject that the group shows an interest in learning about.

Playing a Commander game will be a majority of the class. Both beginners and more experienced players are welcome, as players will be learning through input from both the teacher and fellow players.

A post-game discussion will allow players, and the teacher, to share their play experience and insights.

Having fun playing is emphasized (why else would you play?!), while every opportunity to develop the critical thinking, sportsmanship, math, social skills, etc that arises during game play will be used to enhance each student's learning experience.
Learning Goals
On the surface, participants will simply be learning how to play Commander better while having loads of fun. The secret is, they will also be gaining valuable lessons in improving their social skills, their ability to adapt to changing situations, math (don't tell them that), and a host of other life improving skills.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The manufacturer of Magic the Gathering has this game rated as ages 13 and up. My experience has shown me most children 9 and up are mature enough to play the game. The game does have vampires, zombies and other "creatures," and artistic depictions of those characters, that may disturb some children, though I have never actually heard that was anyone's experience.
Supply List
Participants will need a MTG Commander deck of 100 cards.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello fans of Magic the Gathering (and their parents)!
Following a forty year career in publishing and as a small business owner, including running a Magic the Gathering (MTG) game store, I have embarked on a new passion; sharing my knowledge of, and love of, Magic the Gathering to students all over the world.
My tutoring and teaching experience includes students aged 4 to 40. I have taught in a pre-school, tutored college students in English and writing, mentored professional writers and helped hundreds learn Magic the Gathering or improve their game play. Recently, I obtained certification as a Level 5 English as a Second Language instructor to gain additional insights in becoming the best teacher/mentor possible.
I have been playing Magic the Gathering since it first came out in 1993. During that time I have played thousands of games, taken part in hundreds of local and national tournaments and taught dozens of new players how to play the game, as well as mentoring established players on the game's finer points. I am passionate about teaching not only how to play the game, but also mentoring students in the critical thinking, mathmatics, social skills, sportsmanship and other life skills which are part of the game. My favorite thing about Magic the Gathering is just how much fun it is to play, while also providing so many lessons that can enhance your life.
Feel free to message me if you would like to schedule an individual class or classes on any aspect of MTG. From how to play the game to advanced tournament preparation, let's take your Magic the Gathering skills to the next level and have tons of fun while learning the world's #1 trading card game!
