Students will be provided with feedback throughout the class. As we work through the different examples, I will ensure they are on the right track with solving before moving on with the lesson.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
In this class, students will work with me to solve a variety of math emoji puzzles via a power point to reinforce basic math operations (addition, subtraction, and multiplication). We'll discuss different strategies for solving the problems and connect to the idea of solving one- and two- step equations! Class will begin with a warm-up to practice the prerequisite skills needed to be able to solve the problems, then I will call on volunteers to share their answers as we go through each puzzle. We will begin working on one-step equations, then build to two-step equations in each class. The expectation is for students to be familiar with the basic math operations. It is a fun way to build the foundation for Pre-Algebra! Our routine will be: 1. 2 minute warm-up reviewing basic math facts (and order of operations) 2. 2 minute warm-up going over how to solve the puzzles (if needed) 3. 26 minutes of fun solving and reviewing the answers for the puzzles (students will be given time to work out the answers before sharing so all learners have a chance to think and solve before hearing the answers) We usually go through about 8 puzzles per class, and the puzzles increase in skill as we go along. Help is always provided as needed and we review each puzzle before moving on to the next. Puzzles will be different for each class so learners can come back week after week for a new experience and continued practice! Join us anytime!
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to use inverse (or opposite) operations in order to find the value of each emoji shown. Mental math will also be strengthened as students try to find the missing numbers to complete each math equation. Solving equations is a skill students begin working on in 4th and 5th grades, and they will continue using the skill in Pre-Algebra courses and higher. The variety of examples we will complete will help build students' foundation in a more engaging way than just following "rules"!

Solving equations is a skill that students will use throughout their math career. A strong foundation built early will only serve to make their experiences with solving easier. I will use a variety of resources collected over my 25 years of teaching middle and high school to make the learning experience engaging and enjoyable.
