Students should know the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that they make. Students should have some experience reading short words such as cat, frog, and cup. If students have taken my Beginning Phonics CVC and Beginning Consonant Blends CVCC course, they will be prepared for this course. We will use consonant blends (fr, sm, gl, etc.) in some words we read. Each class will use slides to show the letters and words we are learning. Lesson #1: We will talk about the letter e and introduce the rule about magic e (also known as bossy e or silent e). We will practice reading word with the long A sound, such as cake, frame and made. Lesson #2: We will read a short story to review long A words, and then we will use the magic e rule to read words with a long O sound, such as rode, smoke, and home. Lesson #3: We will read a short story to review long A and long O words, and then we will use the magic e rule to read words with a long I sound, such as hide, bike, and slime. Lesson #4: We will read a short story to review long A, long O and long I words, and then we will use the magic e rule to read words with a long U sound, such a mule, huge, and cute. Lesson #5: We will read a short story to review long A, long O, long I and long U words, and then we will use the magic e rule to read words with a long E sound, such as Pete, gene, and mete. Lesson #6: We will play a game in which we practice reading words with long A, long O, long I, long U and long E sounds that end in a magic e.
