In this on-going course for 3rd grade students, students will learn comprehension strategies through grade-level, non-fiction magazines. Students will practice main idea, text features, compare and contrast, squential order, and vocabulary.

Description
Class Experience
In this class, we will be using text around a 3rd grade reading level. Each day, students will learn a new comprehension strategy through a Scholastic News Magazine. Each magazine will cover specific skills, have a fun video and game, as well as an activity. Below are weekly examples of the course, magazines, and skills that will be covered each week. New magazines come out each month; therefore, the skills/strategies/focus/articles will change. Week of 6/05 * Comprehension Strategy -...
* Students will read and discuss Grade 3 appropriate informational texts * Students will identify key details in articles * Students will read grade-level vocabulary * Students will identify nonfiction text features * Students will use visuals to examine and analyze information (settings, events, characters, information) * Students will identify the main idea and details of a text * Students will compare and contrast two or more texts * Students will identify and retell events and facts in a sequence * Students will evaluate and discuss ideas encountered in texts * Students will read grade-level sight words * Students will write opinion pieces
Throughout the course, each class will require a 1 or 2-page handout, depending on the class. Students will need a pencil and possibly coloring utensils.
40 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
