Remember Mad Libs, those fun fill-in-the-blank stories? This one-time class will review parts of speech by filling in the blanks of a Star Wars story with nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, conjunctions, and interjections. We will also enhance our stories with literary devices like similes and hyperbole. After we create these stories, we will share illustrations inspired by the silliness! There is sure to be so much laughter that we might just forget that we are learning all about grammar in the process! [Please Note: I do not post my availability for auto-scheduled classes, but families are welcome to message me to request a section of any of my classes that better meets their scheduling needs. I'm always happy to accommodate when I can.]
Learning Goals
Students will learn (or review) the 8 parts of speech through games and creative expression.

External Resources

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Alanna Ireland and I believe that anyone can write (and maybe even learn to love it)!
I am a homeschool mom with a bachelor's in Education who provides writing instruction, tutoring, proofreading, and grading assistance to students and parents. Locally, I teach small-group history-based writing classes, tutor individual students, and contract to teach academic writing through a charter school. I have 20 years experience in the field of education and literacy. I have worked as a public school teacher, children's librarian, Head Start administrator, and child care center director.
Many students are reluctant to even begin writing an assignment because they see it as one overwhelming and impossible endeavor instead of a series of small, manageable tasks. My specialty is breaking down the writing process into incremental, easy to understand steps so that students feel confident in their ability to express themselves through writing. I also teach creative writing processes for those students who have trouble getting started and for those who have so many ideas that it's hard for them to narrow their focus.
When I'm not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy spending time hiking in the woods or attending street festivals in my hometown with my family and dogs. I am an avid gardener and have over 50 houseplants! I love to share my expertise in homesteading skills such as gardening, composting, sourdough bread baking, and fermenting. Be sure to look for my classes featuring these skills as well.
In addition to all of this, I love to write short stories, occasionally get paid for my writing, and am working on a master's degree.
I am happy to consider any scheduling requests for any of my classes; however, my schedule changes on a weekly basis. For this reason, I don't post my availability on Outscool. Please contact me and I will create a section if I am available. I know that Outschool families live all over the world and I will try my best to find a time that will meet your family's needs.
I welcome questions from parents about any of my classes and am looking forward to getting to know families through Outschool!
