I am excited to be sharing one of my favorite Shakespeare plays!

This course is your gateway to Shakespeare’s tagedy, Macbeth. A character ruined by ambition. It is a story that is as intense as it is timeless.

What We’ll Explore:

Character Spotlight: Meet Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the mysterious witches. We’ll dig into their complex personalities and decisions, exploring what makes Macbeth a classic “tragic hero” and how his choices lead to disaster.

Theme Breakdown: Dive into major themes like ambition, power, and guilt. We’ll discuss why these themes matter and how they connect to real-life situations and modern stories.

Historical Context: Travel back to Shakespeare’s time to understand the world he was writing about. Find out how the era’s politics and culture influenced the play and its characters.

Storytelling Secrets: Discover how Shakespeare builds suspense and tension. We’ll look at his use of dramatic techniques to keep the audience hooked and see how these techniques make the play so compelling.

Modern Connections: See how the themes of Macbeth show up in today’s world. We’ll connect the play’s ideas to movies, books, and issues that you encounter daily.

Class Discussions: Share your thoughts and interpretations of the play with your classmates. Your unique perspective is valuable, and discussing different views will deepen your understanding of the story.

Here’s what you can look forward to:

In each unit we will read an act from Macbeth.

Each lesson will cover several scenes from that act.

  1. I will provide a short video that gives an overview of what to look for in the reading.
  2. Students will be encouraged to read/listen to the play on their own.
  3. will provide a longer video that goes over the scenes read. This is where we will focus on characters, themes and plot.
  4. Students will have an opportunity to respond to the reading in a variety of ways: discussion questions, character lists, plot maps, creative responses, "what ifs" and sharing opinions.

At the end of this course, students will be encouraged to watch a version of the play on their own. I will offer several suggestions.

Get ready to dive into the dark and thrilling world of Macbeth and see why this play has intrigued audiences for centuries!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This play involves witches and murder. I will show clips during the video lessons but none will be graphic or violent. Students will be encouraged to watch a video of the play on their own. I encourage parents to watch the play with their student or preview it for appropriateness.
Supply List
Students should have access to a copy of the play. I prefer students who are new to Shakespeare use the "No Fear Shakespeare" version that has modern language side by side with the original text.

I encourage students to listen as they read. A free audio version can be found on Librivox.org but I have found the the Folger versions that can be found on Audible or streamed from the library are superior.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

My expertise in Shakespeare spans back to the 1990s when I studied Shakespeare in college which culminated in a trip to London where we watched many of the plays. Currently a group of homeschooled teens gather at my house each week as we explore a play together. I also have 20 years of teaching Shakespeare to my own large family.
