Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
In this ongoing class, students will have the opportunity to learn more about the reading strategies of making connections, main idea/details, 5 finger retell and making predictions. All these skills will revolve around 4 food related texts which include: “Spork”, “Spoon”, “Straw” and “Chopsticks.”

Before instruction begins, we’ll take a few minutes to do introductions, a brief icebreaker and review some simple class rules. Then the fun begins!

I will be screen sharing the texts and follow up materials via document camera so learners are able to follow along better and observe me doing follow up activities with them.

A breakdown of the meetings and topics will be as follows:

Week of May 9, Topic 1~Our learners will have the opportunity to practice the skill of making connections to the text, “Spork”. We will use the comparison image of links in a chain to illustrate this reading strategy. Learners will learn about how we can make connections to a text in the following ways: text to self, text to text and text to world. After giving some examples, we will use use the text Spork to fill out an organizer demonstrating this skill. As an extension activity, your student will be able to color and customize their own printable spork!

Week of May 16, Topic 2~ Your students will surely enjoy the charming story of “Spoon”! Through this heartwarming text, learners will have the opportunity to practice the skill of identifying the main idea and supporting details. We will use the comparison image of an umbrella and raindrops to illustrate this reading strategy. Learners will recreate this on an organizer for follow up practice. Students will also be able to provide their own examples of details when given a main idea prompt. ( Ex:Birthdays are fun!)

Week of May 23, Topic 3~ The focus of this lesson will be using the reading strategy of retelling, implementing the five fingers of the hand. Each finger will represent a different component, such as settings, characters, problem, events, and solution. Through the the story of an adorable, speedy straw, learners will be able to retell the story by filling in their own printable hand activity with events from the text, “Straw.”

Week of June 6, Topic 4~The text “Chopsticks “ will entertain your learners with an engaging story about two best friends, who are forced to learn to live apart. We will practice the strategy of making predictions, or guesses at various points in the reading, about what might happen next. Predictions will be made before reading, during reading, and after reading. A follow up organizer will be completed after reading. We will see if your students can predict what will happen to these inseparable friends!

I believe in student centered learning, so I am happy to adjust to the pace at which learners are comfortable and confident. More challenging work can be given if that’s needed as well. I hope your learners will join me in this ongoing course of educational and fun learning! See you in the classroom!
