Class Experience

With most beginning readers, letter reversals are very common. Studies show that letter reversals are developmentally appropriate until age 7 or 8. However, if you notice your learner struggles with letter reversals, waiting until they are 8 years old to intervene can form incorrect habits that will be harder to break later on. Supporting good habits early will benefit your beginning reader and prevent confusion.

In this one time course, students will learn strategies to help them develop good habits in identifying lowercase b and d through various hands on activities and games that will solidify letter formation and letter identification. Students will have many opportunities to write the letters b and d in fun ways using the continuous stroke method which helps to etch the distinct letter pattern into their minds.

Because of the age of the learners, parents are encouraged to be available to the learner during class to assist with activities and transitions.

Because each child is different and learns at a different pace, this class does not guarantee to correct a letter reversal concern. By learning correct methods in this class, students will benefit most from practicing these methods overtime on their own.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Courtney Thornton and have a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with two endorsements - one in Reading and one in English as a Second Language (ESL). My teaching license is current in the state of Utah and I have 8 years of classroom experience teaching kindergarten, 2nd grade and 3rd grade. I currently tutor students in Reading while being a stay at home mom to my three-year-old daughter.

I believe my role as an educator is to create an environment where students feel safe sharing ideas and taking risks while helping them develop and recognize their highest learning potential. I love teaching in a way where learning is fun and engaging by incorporating the four learning styles (visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic) into my lessons.

My teaching passion is in early reading skills so you will see most of my classes directed toward helping students develop a strong reading foundation to build upon. I also love teaching classes centered around early math skills, and STEM (Science, technology, engineering, math) projects.

Outside of teaching, my hobbies are spending time with my family exploring the outdoors, DIY projects around the house, traveling, gardening and baking.

Thank you for reading my profile. I hope to see your child in my classroom soon!
