This eight week semester course will help any young writer gain confidence and experience with different types of writing. This course is perfect for first or second grade students who need support and guidance with the writing process. Throughout the course students will learn proper grammar, editing, utilizing evidence, determining, as well as, creating the three main types of writing, and more. Literacy skills like compare and contrast, cause and effect, using different perspectives, and more will be addressed throughout the semester. Each week will consist of two live meetings, as well as online homework and writing assignments for students to complete independently. Live sessions will consist of direct instruction, discussion, and prompts that match the weekly theme. The Outschool platform will be the primary form of communication. Students will also access the NEARPOD and Quizizz platforms to complete weekly assignments and games for review. Each week of the semester will have a focus based on a different Common Core Writing Standard. Week 1: Writing and Grammar Basics and the Writing Process Week 2: Sentence Structure Week 3: Author's Purpose and the Three Types of Writing Week 4: Opinion Writing Week 5: Expository Writing Week 6: Expository Writing with EVIDENCE Week 7: Narrative Writing Week 8: Choose Your Own Writing, Final Celebrations

HI! I'm Ariel and I can't wait to meet you in the classroom. Yes, ARIEL, like the mermaid! I love helping students develop a love of writing, delve into their curiosity of the world around them through science, and explore the magic of beloved fantasy worlds like Disney and Harry Potter. I have my advanced teaching license for Elementary Education as well as English as a Second Language. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2013. I then received my Master's Degree in Elementary Education from the world renowned Johns Hopkins University in 2015 I live outside of Baltimore, Maryland with my husband and little kitten. I love to sing, smile, and make children laugh.
Ever since I was a little kid I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I love learning even now as an adult, and there is nothing better than helping students learn and share my passion for education. I am currently in my ninth year teaching in Maryland Public Schools. Working online has given me so much joy and I cannot wait to continue teaching here with Outschool. See you in the classroom soon!
