This class is for young learners who can already play chess, but haven't yet gotten a firm handle on tactics and strategy - a great followup course to take after finishing one of our "Low Sensory Chess" courses. Some of the lessons include taking a deeper look at the strategies discussed in the previous course, while other lessons introduce brand new topics altogether. Each week's lesson starts with about 10-15 minutes of explanation and discussion of the week’s topic, followed by, for the remaining duration of each class, the learners collectively playing as a team against the teacher for practice (the teacher will move the pieces on the screen for both sides). This class requires no external software or websites, and is specifically designed for ease of access for learners who will only have to use Outschool’s integrated Zoom Video Conferencing, to prevent over-stimulation & overwhelming moments of sensory overload for young learners. Schedule of Lessons: Week 1: Review of Piece Movement and the Basics Week 2: Review of Check and Checkmate Rules Week 3: Review of En Passant Capturing Week 4: Common Checkmate Patterns: Back Rank, Smothered, and Hallway Checkmates Week 5: Scholar's Mate and Fool's Mate Week 6: The Arabian Checkmate and the Knight & Queen Checkmate Week 7: The King & Queen Sandwich Checkmate Week 8: Conclusion: Review, Chess Puzzles, and more
Learning Goals
By the end of this course, students will have a thorough foundational understanding of the game of chess, how to plan ahead, and how to win against their peers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Central New York Chess is a New York State registered Non Profit Organization, and an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. We are on a mission to teach critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and other life and social skills through scholastic chess instruction, to today's youth. Our classes are primarily directed at elementary & middle-school-aged children, and are organized into 8-week semesters of once-weekly 60-minute long classes (8 meetings total), each comprised of approximately 30 minutes of lecture format followed by approximately 30 minutes of organized play between the students. We've been teaching these classes locally for years, but now are excited to share them with the rest of the world thanks to Outschool!
