These are the topics we will cover in this course: ~Read Love that Dog by Sharon Creech (some will be read together and some in our asynchronous work time). ~Read poetry by William Carlos Williams, Edgar Allen Poe, and many others ~Create a poetry book with our own poems modeled after the poets we are studying that are introduced in the book ~Discuss the elements of poetry Our class will be structured like a book club in which we are reading through and discussing the book in and outside of...
Students will learn about the elements of poetry and also improve fluency, confidence, and appreciation of reading through this poetry book club. They will also learn how to write poetry using mentor text poetry. Week One-Begin reading the book together and discuss the theme and prose style used in the book. Week Two-Continue Reading Love that Dog, and begin writing the first poem based on the poem, "The Red Wheel Barrel", by William Carlos Williams. Week Three-Discuss Shape poems and their use of them in the book. Write a shape poem and continue reading the book. Week Four-Continue Reading and discussing Love that Dog and the central themes involved. Write a poem based on "The Bells", by Poe. Week Five-Finish the book, design a shape poem and present the poetry book to the class(depending on comfort level).
Students will read the equivalent of 10-15 pages on their own. This book is written in prose and there are much fewer words on a page. We will read in class together and begin each assignment together. They will be expected to research and write the poetry book in their homework time between classes. The work outside of class with reading, researching, and writing should be approximately one hour depending on what the students finish in our classtime.
Students will be assessed by pass/fail and written comments on their final project-poetry book. This book will include all of the poems we write using mentor poems from famous poets like Poe and Williams.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Students will use google docs and slides by using a Gmail account, whether parent created or student-created. Studnets will be given a link and access code to both Padlet and Flipgrid to create posts and videos for assignments and classwork. .
We will refer to and read Love that Dog by Sharon Creech.
