Description

Class Experience

Students will be able to do the following Common Core Goals:
4. SL.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions, building on other's ideas and expressing their own clearly.
4 SL.1c - Pose and respond to specific questions to clarify or follow-up on information and make comments that contribute to the discussion and link to the remarks of others.
4 RL. 1 - Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
4 RL - 2 - Determine a theme of a story or poem from details in the text.
4 RL - 3 - Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g. a character's thoughts, words or actions)
I have a Master of Education degree from the State University of New York at Potsdam. I have taught fourth grade for the past thirty-two years and have used the Common Core curriculum to teach my fourth graders. I have successfully used these reading strategies in my classroom.
Students may have some reading to do outside of class. They may choose to write some poems to share in class.
Students must independently purchase a copy of Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. I am encouraging students to have their own copies so that we can annotate as we complete our close read. Students may use a library book and have sticky notes handy to use for annotation. Students should also have pencils, paper and the bookmark provided in our Outschool Classroom ready for each lesson.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Student progress will be assessed based on responses given during class discussions.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
I encourage parents to read the review of the book on Common Sense Media. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/love-that-dog
In our first class, I will be sharing some general classroom rules and policies. I would like to make parents aware of the procedures as well.
- For everyone's safety and to allow for more engaging class discussions, students are expected to have working microphones and video for the entirety of this class, positioned in such a way as to allow all participants to both hear and see them.
- I will have all students muted to prevent distractions from background noise. If a student would like to ask a question, share a thought or respond to another learner, they will simply need to raise their hand, and I will unmute them as quickly as possible.
- I will have the Zoom chat set to "host only" for the majority of the lessons. This means that students can chat with me but not to one another or the entire classroom. This allows for more opportunities for students to use their voice to express their thoughts.
- I believe that all students deserve a supportive focused and welcoming learning environment. I understand that students need to move around and get the wiggles out - but if that energy becomes disruptive, rude, combative or disrespectful towards another learner or myself, students will be issued a warning. If the behavior continues, they will be moved to the waiting room. If the behavior persists, they will be removed from class and will need to watch the video for the remainder of the lesson. This should be a comfortable space for students to share their thoughts and ideas.

Students must have a copy of Love That Dog by Sharon Creech.
