Class Experience
We will cover what a sonnet is, namely a type of poetry Shakespeare wrote in iambic pentameter with a particular rhyme scheme. Using a combination of Prezi video presentation and Google Slides, I will go in-depth to explain how he organized his poetic ideas into a very compact form. Using primarily Google slides, we will then analyze Shakespeare's sonnets for their themes, literary devices, and the way he uses the poetry to enhance and heighten emotion and ideas. This class is taught in English.
Students will learn the difference between prose, iambic pentameter, and blank verse. They will learn what a sonnet is and the terminology associated with sonnets like quatrain and couplets. Students will also apply their knowledge of literary devices such as metaphors, hyperbole, personification, and sensory details as they work on constructing a couplet themselves.
While there is no homework for this course, students are encouraged to write a couplet of iambic pentameter and share it on the page board. Students are also encouraged to write a complete sonnet based on the printable guide that is part of the course page.
1 file available upon enrollmentStudents will be given a one page handout to help them write their sonnets. Though it isn't essential, they are welcome to join an interactive Nearpod lesson to work on their sonnets in a more interactive way. The lesson is free and the join code will be provided at the start of the lesson. The lesson allows the students to quiz themselves, draw imagery that they might want to include in their poetry, and construct iambic pentameter lines by filling in the blanks.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
