Class experience
US Grade 8 - 11
Intermediate Level
What is realism? Surrealism? What do two very different poets, Shakespeare and Pablo Neruda, have to teach us about love and reality? In this one hour class, we will read and analyze Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 (My Mistress Eyes are Nothing Like the Sun) and Pablo Neruda's One Hundred Love Sonnets-XVII. Although similar in theme (both sophisticated love poems), these two poems illustrate that despite the same form their poetic philosophies lead to very different results. In this class,...
Students will understand the terms, be able to apply them to the poems that they read, and gain both understanding and appreciation of the form and the individual poems.
I am a published author (1 traditionally published book and another due to be published by the end of 2021) and I love both writing and reading. In every class, but especially literature, I strive to help students make the connections that make learning applicable. How does what I read illustrate my life? How can I use the writer's techniques in my own writing? How can this help me better understand access other literature?
Parents should be aware that both sonnets are love poetry and so uses rather mature (though not explicit) language. The poems can be accessed at the URLs below to be reviewed before the class is chosen. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45108/sonnet-130-my-mistress-eyes-are-nothing-like-the-sun https://www.babelmatrix.org/works/es/Neruda%2C_Pablo-1904/Soneto_XVII_%28No_te_amo_como_si_fueras_rosa_de_sal%2C_topacio%29/en/32901-Sonnet_XVII_%28I_do_not_love_you_as_if_you_were_salt-rose%2C_or_topaz%29
