We will explore Louis Pasteur's background as a practical chemist who rose from humble beginnings to become the leading scientist of his day. His first battles like disproving the theory of "spontaneous generation" of microorganisms and his application of his understanding of these organisms to fighting diseases like anthrax and rabies will be explored. Also, we will look at the various vaccines that he helped develop even though he was a chemist by training and not a doctor or surgeon, will...
Students will learn some important vocabulary terms for biology and chemistry like microbiology, microbes, etc. Students will be asked to describe how Pasteur disproved the theory of "spontaneous generation" Students will be asked to show how began revolutionizing the idea of vaccinations to help keep people and animals free of certain illnesses. Students should pick a particular vaccine (whether discovered by Pasteur or other scientists) like smallpox, rabies, polio, flu, and see the methods that the scientists used to prove their vaccines worked.
Students will be asked to describe one of Pasteur's experiments in the area of Pasteurization, vaccination, or proof of germ theory. Students will be asked to describe the difference between bacteria and viruses. Students can write an essay on some of the struggles that Pasteur overcame to have his discoveries recognized.
3 files available upon enrollmentThe homework assignment is attached for enrolled students.
Students will be given a worksheet answer. Students will be quizzed on some of the vocabulary terms that are in the Powerpoint presentation. Students should also research various vaccines whether by Pasteur or others (like Salk and Rabin developers of polio vaccines). What disease were they designed to treat? How was the vaccine developed?
